This Is How Lorna Simpson Makes a Painting

American artist Lorna Simpson first unleashed her forays into painting at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. This fall, the works reappear in New York, where they’ll be holding court at Salon 94‘s Bowery location starting September 8.

In both content and form, the images themselves are natural progressions for the artist, as they incorporate familiar elements of photography and ink wash. According to press literature, Simpson selected her images for these collage works from the archives of the Associated PressJet, and Ebony. Right in the center of her nine-panel configuration for Soundlessness (2016), for instance, are mirror images of a woman in a white dress ascending and descending a helical staircase.
