Must-See Art Guide: Los Angeles
This week’s guide includes Alec Monopoly, Morris Louis, Lynda Benglis, and more.

The art world knows that Los Angeles is more than movie stars: In recent decades it has generated some of its greatest luminaries, including the likes of David Hockney, Shepard Fairy, and Ed Ruscha. This week, visitors to the City of Angels can expect to encounter pieces from both emerging and established artists who are helping to make L.A. a cultural hotspot.
While in town, check out Alec Monopoly’s latest addition to the cityscape—a monumental portrait of Hollywood icon and Andy Warhol-muse Marilyn Monroe. Painted on the facade of an L.A. building on trendy Melrose Avenue, the mural celebrates celebrity culture and Pop Art. Next, head over to the “2017 Summer Group Show” at Mixografia to explore a diverse array of work from prominent contemporary artists. This year’s exhibition highlights work produced at Mixografia’s affiliated printing studio, and features lesser-seen works from artists Lynda Benglis, Helen Frankenthaler, and John Baldessari. Finally, don’t miss Ben Jackel’s latest solo exhibition “Reign of Fire,” which explores the nature of warfare through a series of ceramic pieces. The show, which chronicles the development of military weaponry throughout time, is sure to captivate art lovers and history buffs alike.
