Pack your mistletoe—this holiday season, we’re heading to the city of love. Whether you’re in Paris for the boulevards or boulangeries, you won’t want to miss the art at the heart of this city. Bundle up in your chicest veste and écharpe and venture out to Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac to see the newest painted-collage work by Russian-born American Conceptual artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. Collaborators since 1989, the duo addresses utopic messages embedded in Soviet-sponsored propaganda in light of the bloc’s collapse, while more recently experimenting with abstract motifs. For works on paper by the father of Conceptual art, stop by Michel Vidal for Marcel Duchamp. You may recognize the beloved bride figure from Duchamp’s The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915–1923), presented here as a print alongside more representational studies of the same subject and nudes d’après Courbet.

Courbet, the founder of the Realist movement, is invoked in yet another show in the city of light—an exceptional exhibition of photography by Marc Riboud and Sebastião Salgado at Polka Galerie. The works displayed—selected by the artists’ spouses as a homage to Courbet’s  L’Origine du Monde (1866)—depict the female subjects Riboud and Salgado have encountered in their careers, probing the mysteries of the gaze. If you’re instead searching for some whimsical, brilliantly patterned portrait photography, you won’t want to miss the work of Malian artist Seydou Keïta at Galerie Nathalie Obadia. For painting, sculpture, and drawing as enchanting as Keïta’s photography, head over to Galerie Balice Hertling for an exhibition of work by Transavanguardia artist Enzo Cucchi. Perhaps the artist, who is self-taught, can inspire you to follow through on that New Year’s resolution to learn a new art with his Surrealistic, expressive works.
