Pirelli’s Popular and Arty Nude Calendars Get A 50-Year Retrospective

It features a "censored" selection of images too risqué to publish at the time.

For the past five decades, Pirelli, an Italian tire manufacturer based in Milan, has released special calendars featuring fashion models and actresses, which are frequently shot by a renowned photographer.

But let’s be honest, no one actually uses the calendar to check the date.

For 2015, Steven Meisel photographed up-and-coming models Gigi Hadid, Anna Ewers, and Sarah Luss in suggestive poses clad in scanty latex get-ups.

In August, in celebration of the calendar’s 50th anniversary, Taschen will be releasing a “retrospective” book, Pirelli—The Calendar: 50 Years and More.

Within the glossy pages, readers will find images by Richard Avedon, Peter Beard, Patrick Demarchelier, Nick Knight, Karl Lagerfeld, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Terry Richardson, Mario Testino, and Bruce Weber.

Usually reserved for important clients and VIPs, the calendars will now be made available to laymen. Look out for screen goddesses like Sophia Loren and Penélope Cruz, as well as supermodels Gisele, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Milla Jovovich, and Kate Moss.

And there’s a bonus! The coffee table book, which is sure to incite the curiosity of your guests, will include an unpublished 1963 calendar as well as behind-the-scenes images from various shoots, and a “censored” section filled with photos that were deemed, at the time, to be too risqué to be published.
