Pope Francis’s Niece Gets Solo Exhibition in Miami
An exhibition of work by artist and architect Cristina Bergoglio has debuted at Miami’s Conrad Hotel, reports Local 10. If that last name sounds familiar, it’s because she shares it with Pope Francis, the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, who is her uncle.
The show of urban landscape paintings, each allegedly worth between €3,000 and €20,000 ($4,075–27,160), is on view in the hotel’s bar and restaurant on the 25th floor, and is open to the public.
The Madrid-based Bergoglio, born in Argentina in 1964, was on the elliptical machine at the gym when she learned of her uncle’s election as pope. Although she thinks of herself as spiritual, she is not religious.
“I’m not afraid to say I see the church as outdated,” Bergoglio told Local 10. “That’s why I believe life has put my uncle to renew this certain system of thought that was getting stagnated.”
The artist plans to take a trip to Rome for an audience with the pope, according to La Razón. She plans to make him a painting of St. Francis of Assisi, her uncle’s papal namesake, because a Roman cityscape would be too ostentatious and “I do not think he would particularly like being in a portrait.”
