This week we’re going East: The next stop on the must-see art tour is Shanghai. The ART01 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair opens today, and brings with it 102 major galleries from around the world, including heavy hitters like Simon Lee, Hauser & Wirth, and David Zwirner. As always, we’ve gathered a list of local gallery shows coinciding with the fair to help keep visitors busy, and get them out of the convention center and into the streets.

Visit ShangART for a solo show of the late, great painter Yu Youhan. Covering several distinct phases in the artist’s distinguished career, the exhibition includes his early Cezanne-like still lifes and his scintillating Pointillist-esque work. For work of another idiosyncratic painter, don’t miss the Fosun Foundation’s survey of A.R. Penck. Then, Arario Gallery presents the large-scale installation work of Kohei Nawa, only the second solo show for this promising and ambitious artist. Lastly, the group show “Scraggly Beard Grandpa” at Capsule Shanghai assembles the work of 12 various artists that had previously lived and work in residency at the gallery, and is full of energetic dialogue that often can only be achieved under the radical, unfamiliar circumstances that come from being in an unfamiliar place and as part of a collective.
