Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon Joins 303 Gallery

Artist Kim Gordon has been picked up by 303 Gallery, the gallery has announced. Gordon, who is most widely known as the front-woman of Sonic Youth, a rock band she formed with Thurston Moore in 1981, joins a roster of internationally-renowned artists including Jacob Kassay, Sue Williams, and Doug Aitken.

Perhaps lesser known than her prowess as a musician is Gordon’s career in visual arts, which began in the late 1970s when she studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. You may have seen recent shows of her work at KS Art and White Columns, which just last fall presented “Design Office with Kim Gordon – Since 1980,” the first survey of Gordon’s work across the spectrum of her practice including paintings, sculpture, film, and video.

Most recently, Gordon has been working on a series of “Twitter Paintings” for which she renders the Twitter streams of pop culture figures like celebrity art critic Jerry Saltz and artist Richard Prince. The Twitter paintings seem like an extension of her ongoing “Noise Painting” series, for which the artist renders the names of experimental and noise bands like “Pussy Galore” and “Weak Sisters” in a drippy scrawl on canvas. She also has a corresponding series depicting names of gallerists like “Larry Gagosian” and “Barbara Gladstone” with the same graffiti-esque feel. We wonder if she’ll add 303 gallerist “Lisa Spellman” to the series.
