About the Artist: In Brooklyn-based Dodi King’s debut solo show “Mirror Mirror” with Superposition Gallery, the artist presents large-scale oil paintings and drawings filled with imagery at once terrestrial, cosmic, and fantastical. Here, fairies and alienesque women float amid anthropomorphic plants and protozoa-like shapes dot the canvases like small planets. King, who was born in 1999 in Jacksonville, Florida, says their works are rooted in the subconscious and spirituality, a place where archetypes and myths emerge, and which offers the artist a formal language for expressing abstract ideas.

Why We Like It: King’s works all seem to hint back at an unfolding singular narrative, but just what is occurring remains purposely uncertain. Instead, the view appears almost as a dreamer lost within a dream, strange scenarios flung up within the mind and without explanation. King’s imagery references spiritualist artists like Hilma af Klint and Dorothea Tanning, but also the dynamism and vibrant palettes of Robert Colescott and Faith Ringgold.

According to the Artist: “With an emphasis on spiritual expansion informed by pre-colonial ideologies, I reference our collective capacity for a more holistic recognition of art as living, breathing, autonomous, and timeless. Each piece occupies a unified timeline with no defined beginning or ending.”
