In the aftermath of the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 129 people (including a French artist and a German art critic), and left many more injured, street artists around the world have created murals and works expressing solidarity with Parisians, which are being shared on Instagram and Twitter under the hashtag #SprayForParis.
Art is often used to bring people together in cities and countries affected by war, acts of terrorism, and civil strife, from graffiti for Syria to street art in Beirut. Following this year’s terrorist attack on French satirical publication Charlie Hebdo, fellow cartoonists around the world responded with a number of touching and even hilarious illustrations, many of which were shared with the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie.
Immediately following the most recent attacks in the French capital, artist Jean Jullien created a simple drawing of a peace sign combined with the Eiffel Tower that quickly went viral, as people searched for a way to express their sadness as well as their solidarity with the City of Light.
But given that Paris is known for its vibrant street art culture, which has spawned famous personas like Kashink, JR, Invader, Blek le Rat, Princess Hijab, and Mr. Brainwash, the solidarity displayed from other street artists in the contributions to #SprayForParis below is especially touching.
