A Norman Rockwell painting that was reported stolen by a Queens storage facility has turned up in Ohio, according to art handling company Welpak Corp. After selling at a Sotheby’s auction for over US$1 million in May 2013, Sport (1939), the basis for a Saturday Evening Post cover by the artist, went missing in September.
Welpak, which had been managing the painting’s transport and storage after the sale, helped track down the missing artwork thanks to a private investigator, Dean Golemis. The painting was found undamaged, in its original storage wrapping. As of yet, no charges have been filed.
