Coinciding with the opening of its newest show, dedicated to the art of the selfie, the Saatchi Gallery has revealed the winners of its #SaatchiSelfie competition, an open contest begun on January 23 and ended on March 12, judged by a panel of art stars composed of Tracey Emin, Idris Khan, Juergen Teller, Juno Calypso, and Saatchi Gallery CEO Nigel Hurst. Dawn Woolley, an artist from Cambridge, UK, has been named the overall winner for her photograph titled, The Substitute (Holiday).
Nine more artists were shortlisted, including Sarah Carpenter (UK), Finnian Croy (Scotland), Debora De Haus (Belgium), Ollie Hayward (UK), Felicia Hodoroaba-Simon (Romania), Andy Kassier (Germany), Van O (Russian Federation), Patrick Gonzalez (France), and Ola Walkow (Canada).
Over 8,000 submissions were received for the March 12 deadline. The competition ran ahead of the exhibition “From Selfie to Self-Expression,” which opens at Saatchi Gallery today. The exhibition will be the world’s first to explore the history of the selfie—from self-portraits in oil paint by Old Masters to smartphone snaps of the present day—and to celebrate the selfie as a legitimate mode of artistic expression. The show also aims to underscore the emerging role of the smartphone as a medium.
To congratulate their expert selfie-taking skills, all 10 finalists will receive a Huawei P10 smartphone with dual Leica lens, and have their selfies displayed at the Saatchi Gallery in the “From Selfie to Self-Expression” exhibition. Woolley will jet off to join a Leica Photography Ambassador on an international photo shoot assignment.
