About the Artist: Los-Angeles based French artist Thierry Guetta (b. 1966), known by the moniker Mr. Brainwash, was first exposed to the world of street art in the late 1990s, and he subsequently became part of an international generation of street artists alongside figures such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and Space Invader—the last of which is his cousin. Guette garnered widespread attention following his feature in Banksy’s 2010 documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, which traced his career rise. Known for his large-scale installations as well as prints, Mr. Brainwash’s work is recognized for its unique synthesis of traditional street art styles and motifs with appropriated elements drawn from the work of artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. His self-produced as well as collaborative exhibitions have been known to draw thousands of visitors, and involve major displays of work that engage with—and subvert—cultural icons and events.

Why We Like It: The work included within “The Creative Universe of Mr. Brainwash” highlights some of the artist’s most famous and recognizable elements that can be found throughout his oeuvre, including appropriated figures like Charlie Chaplin, balloons, and Basquiat-style crowns. Another hallmark of his practice, the visual collage of print media scraps and overlain graffiti writing evoke the aesthetics of traditional street art, harkening back to his early career. Bold and dynamic, each work my Mr. Brainwash invites closer looking, parsing through the myriad shapes and forms to trace his creative thought, which is deeply embedded in the current zeitgeist. Further, the juxtapositions between different recent works presents the chance to see what cultural moments and events currently preoccupy his practice on the whole.
