Hammer Museum’s 2016 ‘Made in LA’ Will Feature a TV Show and a Fashion Label
Nearly half of the artists were born in the 1980s.
The artist list is out for the Hammer Museum’s 2016 biennial, “Made in LA 2016: a, the, though, only.”
The show, which was founded in 2012 and is in its third edition, aims to highlight the artistic scene in LA, which is growing wildly, with galleries from Hauser & Wirth to Maccarone setting up outposts there to complement home-grown operations like Michael Kohn, Blum & Poe, and Regen Projects.
Organized by Hammer curator Aram Moshayedi and Hamza Walker, director of education and associate curator at the Renaissance Society in Chicago, the 2016 edition will feature twenty-six contributing artists and other participants. The museum touts the show’s focus on under-recognized talents, but it does include many participants with lengthy exhibition histories and MFAs from institutions like Yale, CalArts, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
As is the fashion in biennials these days, the show includes not only visual artists but also cultural producers in other fields, such as the television show Labor Link TV, fashion label Eckhaus Latta (founded by two artists and also recently in MoMA PS1’s “Greater New York”), director/cinematographer Arthur Jafa, and dancer/choreographer Adam Linder.
The lineup skews young. While the show includes older artists like Huguette Caland (born in Lebanon in 1931) and Kenzi Shiokova (born in Brazil in 1938), 12 of the 26 participants were born in the 1980s.
One artist exhibited in the show wins the $100,000 Mohn Award. Previous recipients are Alice Könitz (2014) and Meleko Mokgosi (2012).
