Must-See Art Guide: Los Angeles
This week's guide features Mariah Robertson, Chad Attie, Ruben Ochoa, and more.
Let’s see what’s happening in West Coast art this week. Los Angeles was recently crowned as the artist capital of the world—boasting more working artists than even New York!—and it has the gallery scene to match. From your heavy-hitter white cube venues to grungy underground artist-run spaces, the city has it all. It just might take a lot of driving and battling some congested traffic to see it all.
Make a stop by M+B for the solo exhibition of dreamy, jewel-toned photograms by Mariah Roberson. Reading the press release, I’m especially bummed to have missed the opening on January 13, where the artist planned to be “’dancing like a photon’ inside a giant camera,” and welcomed the public to join in. To that end, we recommend attending the opening of The LODGE’s presentation of Chad Attie’s latest body of work on January 27, which will comprise of four years’ worth of the artist’s paintings, drawings, sculpture, and videos. His hut-like sculptures look especially intriguing. Then, printmaking fans should be sure not to miss Mixografia ®’s latest group show, which features the likes of Louise Bourgeois, Lynda Benglis, and Helen Frankenthaler, to name a few. The show intends to highlight artists for whom material is “not only as a means to create, but also as a conceptual foundation of their bodies of work,” and they couldn’t have picked a better lineup to illustrate their point.
