Must-See Art Guide: Shanghai

There’s a lots of switcheroos going on in the Shanghai art scene this week. Condo Shanghai, a collaboration between 22 galleries across nine Shanghai art spaces, is in full swing this week. During the event, local venues share their spaces with foreign galleries and dealers as an alternative to the art fair model. It brings a fresh selection of art to the city, and gives art lovers such as yourself a chance to see an even greater variety of work—in addition to Shanghai’s local mainstays, of course.

Let’s begin over at Capsule Shangahi with the work of American artist Sarah Faux. The exhibition, “Pucker,” includes both large-scale stretched paintings as well as canvas collages, highlighting Faux’s ongoing fascination with the female body and the physical experience of intimacy. Then, head over to Gallery Vacancy, which is currently host to Japanese gallery Misako & Rosen. Its group exhibition “I Mean It When I Say XXX” features six artists, each exploring a playful and idiosyncratic approach to painting. Lastly, M97 Shanghai presents a solo show of Lin Zhipeng, an artist who also sometimes goes by the name No.223 and is a leading figure in China’s contemporary photography scene. His blown-out flash aesthetic coupled with youth-in-revolt sensual imagery has made him a social media and alt zine favorite, with his work appearing in Vice and New Photography China.
