A Gallery That Shows Peppers and Tomatillos?
THE DAILY PIC: Artists meld Cuchifritos gallery and the Essex Market housing it.

THE DAILY PIC (#1507): I like the non-profit Cuchifritos art space, but I love the fact that it is inside the wonderful Essex Market, the only food hall in New York that feels like the ones in Europe, with their vast range of goods, price-points and clienteles. And now, with the market at dire risk from the neighborhood’s rapacious development, Cuchifritos has made its home the subject of a show.
Today’s Pic is a still from a video by Laia Solé and Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful that effects a perfect mash-up between the white-walled gallery it is being shown in and the messier market stalls just around the corner. (Click on my image to watch a clip.) To make the piece, the artists taped up pieces of “green screen” on the gallery walls (and also dressed in “green screen” clothing) and then used digital magic to “hang” footage of the market in the Cuchifritos space. That let them paint a perfect portrait of what makes Cuchifritos special. (Video by Laia Solé / Jorge Ochoa; edition by Laia Solé)
