Austin Considers Building Statue of Naked Rock Star Riding a Dragon
Apropos of nothing, the Austin Music Commission is considering a proposal to erect a statue of rock singer Glenn Danzig riding a dragon to better welcome visitors to eastern Austin’s Red River Cultural District, reports the local CBS affiliate.
The frontman of popular 1970s and 80s horror punk heavy metal band the Misfits and its predecessor Samhain, Danzig has since gone on to a long solo career.
The Danzig-boosting blog Metalsucks is quick to point out that Danzig’s last trip to Austin in 2011 was marred by a truncated set and all around bad behavior from the star—which included demanding French onion soup and a Wendy’s chicken sandwich—so local Misfits fans may be less than inclined to favor a monument in his honor.
A Jersey boy by birth, Danzig doesn’t appear to have any immediately apparent ties to Austin. The statue proposal comes from local live music venue owner James Moody, who admits that the idea is largely a joke, albeit one he’d enjoy seeing made a reality. He proposes casting the statue in gold with ruby eyes.
