The Kunsthaus Hamburg has announced that German conceptual artist Christian Jankowski has been awarded the Finkenwerder Art Prize, Die Welt reports.

The artist is best known for his tongue-in-cheek video art and performances which explore contemporary art’s value system. For example, at Frieze Art Fair, London in 2011 a boat could be acquired for either £65 million ($96 million) as a boat or for £75 million ($110 million) as a Jankowski artwork.

In a statement, the jury honored the multidisciplinary artist whose performances, videos, photography and installations have investigated “the conditions and rules of the art world combined with the representation of pop culture in the media such as television and cinema.”

Jankowski will accept the €20,000 prize at the Airbus factory in Finkenwerder, Hamburg on June 1. The artist will also present a new artwork to mark the occasion.

Since 1999 the aircraft manufacturer Airbus has awarded the Finkenwerder Art Prize to artists who have made an extraordinary contribution to contemporary art in Germany. Previous recipients of the prize include Candida Höfer, Neo Rauch, and Daniel Richter.

The Kunsthaus Hamburg will present an exhibition featuring works by Christian Jankowski from July 7 to August 23.

In November of last year Jankowski was appointed Chief Curator of Manifesta 11, which is slated to open in Zürich, Switzerland in 2016 (see Christian Jankowski Will Curate Manifesta 11).
