It’s time to put the top down and hit the road. On May 30, Auctionata will begin its classic car auction in Berlin.
Forty North American road cruisers and muscle cars will be available on the online marketplace, including Buicks, Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles, and Corvettes; vintage gas pumps and classic car themed sofas will also be offered.
The top lot is expected to be a silver and black 1957 Buick Century convertible with an estimated value of €65,000 ($100,000), with a Chevrolet Bel Air V8 Sport Coupe valued at €60,000 ($91,700) in hot pursuit. Also of interest is a 1962 Plymouth Savoy, a model famously used by the Los Angeles Police Department, which still has its police paint job and markings. The Plymouth has an estimated value of €15,000 ($23,000). And who could leave out this Cadillac ”Stars and Stripes“ sofa with illumination (below), which is estimated at €3,000 ($4,600).
Classic cars have always been about the image, but they have also been trending as an investment of significant value (see Vintage Cars Overtake Art on Luxury Asset Racetrack). Bonhams just recently set an online auction record selling a Porsche Type 962 (see Bonhams Breaks Online Sale Record with $1.6 Million Porsche 962) for €1.5 million ($2.3 million) last weekend.
Even the top auction houses have shown increased interest in the classic car market. In February, Sotheby’s announced that it bought a 25 percent stake in Ontario-based car auctioneer RM Auctions (see Sotheby’s Acquires Ownership Interest In Luxury Car Seller RM Auctions). Sotheby’s first sale was on Amelia Island, Florida in March. A 1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica, selling for $6.38 million, led the $60 million sale.
