Design Competition for Dessau Bauhaus Museum Kicks Off in Germany

The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and the city of Dessau-Roßlau launched a two-stage design competition for a new Bauhaus Museum in the East German city, Architects Journal reports.

In the competition’s first stage, the foundation invites architects to submit entries until the deadline on April 13. During the second step, a jury will whittle down the entries to 30 finalists.

Finally, following further consideration by the foundation, the winning submission will be announced before the end of the year.

According to Art Magazin, the €25 million ($28 million) project will be jointly funded by the State of Saxony and the federal German government.

The foundation has set the target for the opening of the museum to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus in 2019.

The competition brief states, “The planned Bauhaus Museum Dessau will for the first time provide the opportunity to present to the public for the long term the outstanding collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation under the best possible conservation conditions.”

The statement also considers the building’s planned location: “The new building will be constructed inside Dessau’s City Park and will be expected to respect the historic district’s existing qualities and uses. The museum and city park should strengthen and complement each other and enrich the location as a cultural center.”

The competition follows a similar open call for the design of the Weimar Bauhaus museum that took place in 2012. A third design competition is expected to be announced next year for the construction of the Bauhaus Museum in Berlin.

Throughout its existence the esteemed Bauhaus art school was based in the German cities of Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin.
