Mitchell Algus, from Algus Greenspon Gallery, has revealed that he is about to open a new space in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Art News reports. Algus confirmed that the original gallery will continue to trade under its current name, and that he will continue his partnership with Amy Greenspon, with whom he started working in 2010.

Algus told Art News that the new space hadn’t been a long-held plan, but that came about as a result of a series of favorable changes in his personal circumstances. Algus retired recently from his job as a high school teacher, after New York’s mayor Bill de Blasio raised teachers’ pensions, which allowed him to dedicate more time and money to his career as a gallerist.

“Nothing’s changing with Algus Greenspon Gallery,” Amy Greenspon told Art News. “Mitchell is just expanding his purview to include his own exhibition space on the Lower East Side.” “ We’re excited about the new opportunities, the new gallery, and the existing gallery, and our future of collaborating,” she said of her partner’s new venture, declining to comment on the lawsuit between her and her brother Cyrus over the sale of an Ad Reinhardt painting that belonged to their father (see Siblings Quarrel Over “Mishandled Sale” of Ad Reinhardt Painting Worth Millions).

Meanwhile, Algus insisted that the he and Greenspon wouldn’t have a problem splitting up artists between their shared and individual projects, as they have different visions and particular interests.

The Mitchell Algus Gallery’s inaugural exhibition will open on January 25, with works by Augustin Fernandez.
