As anglophiles the world over go crazy over the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s newborn daughter, a British artist was busy creating the first portraits of the newest member of Britain’s royal family, the Daily Mirror reports.
Using the unconventional medium of carefully arranged baby rompers—over 1,000 of them—Nathan Wyburn’s portrait depicts Kate and William holding Princess Charlotte, who is wearing a crown.
Wyburn said that he drew inspiration from research conducted by the British supermarket chain Morrison’s which found that on average parents change a baby’s bodysuit approximately 1,000 times during the first year of their life.
He told Wales Online the portrait was a “challenge” that he “couldn’t turn down.” He elaborated, “One of the hardest parts of this installation was trying to get a view of the portrait in its entirety as it can only be properly seen from a distance due to its size.”
Meanwhile the Italian artist Alexsandro Palombo—best known for his politically infused “Simpsonized” works—has created a drawing of William, Kate, and their new daughter inspired by the popular American cartoon, the International Business Times reports.
Palombo depicts the family emerging from St. Mary’s hospital, where Kate gave birth to the baby Princess Charlotte.
The artist’s latest work is significantly less politicized than his previous pieces which have included a black Bart Simpson being shot by the police, in response to the latest allegations of racial profiling and police violence against African-Americans (see Police Officer Shoots Black Bart Simpson in Artist’s Take on Iconic Cartoon).
