Five Great Auctions to Watch in January 2017

Pick up works by Hockney, Haring, and Twombly.

From Istanbul to Hong Kong, a wide range of work by blue-chip artists such as David Hockney, Cy Twombly, contemporary stars such as Erro and Bjarne Melgaard, and Old Masters including Francisco de Zurburán, goes on the block this month.

In anticipation of the January auctions, and with the help of the artnet Price Database, artnet News has compiled a list of five of the most important sales taking place across the globe.

1. “Beyaz Contemporary and Modern Auction” at Beyaz Müzayede, Istanbul
January 15

Explore the flourishing world of contemporary Turkish art in this auction, which includes work from Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid and Devrim Erbil as well as international stars such as Erro and Bjarne Melgaard.

2. “Boundless: Contemporary Art” at Sotheby’s Hong Kong 
January 19

This sale includes a wide range of Western and Asian modern and contemporary art, including Zao Wou-ki, Keith Haring, Banksy and Yayoi Kusama.

3. Evening & Day Editions at Phillips London
January 19

Painting, sculpture and prints from some the 20th century’s leading artists come to the block at Phillips. Works from Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Pablo Picasso are presented alongside other iconic names.

4. “Master Paintings & Sculpture Evening Sale” at Sotheby’s New York 
January 25

The sale with the highest total estimates this month features Old Master paintings from different schools across Europe, including works from Rubens and Brueghel. Other highlights include a piece by Orazio Gentileschi, father of famed Renaissance painter Artemesia Gentileschi.

5. “Auktion 2017” at Rusterholtz Galerie + Auktionen, Basel
January 28

This auction features compelling abstract works from well-known artists such as Gerhard Richter and Sol LeWitt.
