The Armory Show is celebrating its 25th anniversary by going back to its roots. The 2019 fair will welcome the return of several original participants in its inaugural 1994 edition, including 303 Gallery and Zeno X. In its early years, the show, then known as the Gramercy International Art Fair, took place at the Gramercy Hotel in Manhattan, where galleries rented out individual rooms and propped up works on beds and in bathrooms. (No new nails or tacks were allowed in the walls.) The fair moved to the larger, more corporate, and more forgiving West Side Piers in 2000.
Much has changed in the intervening decades. While the inaugural fair hosted 37 exhibitors, this year, it welcomes 194. That number is, however, down slightly from the 198 galleries in the 2018 edition. Next year’s fair will include 59 new and first-time participants, as well as other original Gramercy Hotel exhibitors including Tanya Bonakdar and Galerie Krinzinger.
Also of note: This year’s curated Focus section, organized by Lauren Haynes of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, will zero in on art that deals with identity through figuration, an increasingly popular approach that marks a shift from the palatable abstraction favored by moneyed collectors at the height of the art market’s boom. Look out for a new sculptural installation by Kapwani Kiwanga at Galerie Jérôme Poggi and recent paintings by Becky Kolsrud at Tif Sigfrids.
Asked about the increasingly competitive fair landscape and the much-scrutinized pressure it places on dealers, the Armory Show’s executive director Nicole Berry told artnet News that the fair instituted a tiered pricing system a few years ago to subsidize participation of small and medium-size galleries. Further, this past spring, before the application process began, the show reduced its booth rate by five percent across all sections. It also now offers consolidated shipping from key European cities as well as discounted hotel rates for exhibitors.
“We’re doing everything we can to help mitigate some of the financial impact that a fair can have,” Berry says. “But a premier art fair in New York city still has great value to them.”
Here is the complete list of exhibitors for the 2019 edition.
