Price Check! Here’s What Sold—and for How Much—at Art Basel 2024

One surprise: the second-most-expensive reported sale was for a work on paper.

Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland.

With the close of Art Basel in beautiful Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday, the art industry is on summer break. (Sort of. Business no longer really stops these days.) Where do things stand? As Artnet’s Margaret Carrigan reported from the Messeplatz, business was slower than normal—no surprise, given the fairly tame results at recent marquee auctions—but work was selling, from eight figures (in a few cases) down to just four. Yes, works can be had for under $5,000 at the world’s most important contemporary art fair, as Vivienne Chow noted in these pages. (If you wanted to spend less than that, your best bet was food—and patience. “The line for sausages at lunch was an hour long, “New York dealer David Nolan told Wet Paint columnist Annie Armstrong.)

Dealers were eager to share some of their big successes throughout the week. Hauser and Wirth sold an Arshile Gorky work on paper for a cool $16 million, David Zwirner found a new home for a $20 million Joan Mitchell, and Galleria Continua, Lisson Gallery, and Mennour moved many Anish Kapoors.

What else sold? Artnet News Pro has an in-depth breakdown of the action, as we do for all the major fairs. But first, let us deliver some essential disclaimers and notes. The majority of these prices were reported in U.S. dollars, but some were in foreign currencies, like euros, pounds, or Swiss francs. In those cases, numbers have been converted to greenbacks and rounded in accordance with our house style. Also, it cannot be emphasized enough that these reports, which come from dealers, the fair itself, and various press flacks, are by no means exhaustive, and they contain only as much information as their sources were willing to share. We hope that you read with great interest, but also with a measure of care.
