Art Basel has named 287 galleries from across 40 countries and regions that will be taking part in its flagship Swiss fair this June. The total number of galleries has gone up slightly from last year’s 285, with 22 first-time exhibitors from across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
The upcoming marquee fair will be the first edition led by Maike Cruse, who joined the Swiss fair giant in July last year as the director of Art Basel in Basel, shortly after CEO Noah Horowitz took over the reins from Marc Spiegler in 2022.
The details of the flagship Swiss fair were announced as its owner, MCH Group, prepares for Art Basel Hong Kong running March 28–30, 2024 which will return to its pre-pandemic scale.
While the proportion of European galleries participating has remained consistent, hovering around 60 percent, the upcoming event will see some fresh input, ranging from a more diverse line-up of the new exhibitors to expanded public programs, a move that can be seen as the fair’s bid to expand its role from being a commercial platform to a place for “social encounters and community building.”
“With the addition of 22 new participants, it promises to be exceptionally dynamic and filled with exciting discoveries. I am thrilled about the expansion of the city-wide program, which now includes the public art sector Parcours on Clarastrasse newly curated by Stefanie Hessler,” Cruse noted in a statement.
Hessler, director of New York’s art non-profit Swiss Institute, succeeds Samuel Leuenberger, who managed the sector over the past eight years. The Conversations program will be curated by Berlin-based writer, editor, and educator Kimberly Bradley. Art Basel will expand its presence within the city by activating the Hotel Merian as a continuous, around-the-clock venue for artistic events and showcases, with details forthcoming.
Among the first-time exhibitors, five are new to the main Galleries sector, including Tina Keng Gallery (Taipei), Madeln Gallery (Shanghai), Mayoral (Paris and Barcelona), Karma (New York and Los Angeles), and Yares Art (New York and Santa Fe). The Galleries sector will also see seven additional exhibitors graduating from Feature and Statements sectors.
Eleven first-time exhibitors will take up the booths of the Feature sector, which is dedicated to art-historical projects. Statements sector, which presents solo booths by emerging artists, will see six newcomers, including ROH Projects from Jakarta, Nome from Berlin, Woonson, which has spaces in Daegu and Seoul in South Korea, Oslo’s OSL contemporary, Felix Gaudlitz from Vienna, and Galerie Anne-Sarah Bénichou in Paris.
“While we introduced a sliding price system in the Galleries sector in 2019, this year’s Statements features 18 solo presentations of emerging artists with younger galleries,” Cruse noted. “We introduce their artists’ work to curators and collectors and aim to shed light on what they do beyond the fair through our various channels.”
The Film sector, curated by writer and curator Filipa Ramos, will return with a compelling selection of moving image works, presented throughout the show week at Basel’s Stadtkino.
