It appears that most galleries remain committed to the market in Hong Kong—and to Art Basel Hong Kong in particular—despite the continually fragile political situation in the city. The fair released its 2020 exhibitor list today, which includes 242 galleries, the exact same number as in 2019—although there are some notable absences and new additions.

Galleries not returning include Beijing’s Long March Space; Germany’s Galerie Buchholz, Galerie König, and Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi; the Swiss Gallery Gmurzynska; and Goodman Gallery, based in Johannesburg, Capetown, and now London.

Two galleries previously told artnet News that their decision to sit the fair out was, in part, informed by the political situation and concerns that some mainland Chinese collectors might skip the trip this year. But a number of others said it was a broader business move at a time when many galleries are looking to limit their fair participation. Beijing’s Long March Space, for example, had announced over the summer that it planned to cut back on fairs.

“To skip Hong Kong this year is a business decision, taking into account the current situation,” Alessandra Consonni, director at Gallery Gmurzynska, told artnet News. “In general, we will gradually reduce the amount of fairs, emphasizing those with a more modern focus.” Other galleries contacted by artnet News that are not returning either declined to comment or did not get back by publishing time.

So far, however, the unrest over Hong Kong’s relationship to mainland China appears to have done little to damage the region’s ascendant market, with high-performing auctions this month led by a $25 million painting by Yoshitomo Nara. Art Basel staff have also worked hard to reassure exhibitors, making one-on-one phone calls and personal visits to dealers’ booths at Frieze London earlier this month.

The fair’s 2020 exhibitor list includes a strong showing from Asia- and Asia-Pacific-based dealers from cities like Manila, Tokyo, Seoul, and Beijing. Returning mainland dealers include Beijing Art Now Gallery and Beijing Commune, both in the Chinese capital, and Antennae Space and Pearl Lam from Shanghai.

There are also a number of dealers making their Hong Kong debuts, including Galerie Gregor Staiger from Zurich, Park View / Paul Soto from Los Angeles and Brussels, and Dusseldorf- and Berlin-based Konrad Fischer Galerie, which will present Bruce Nauman’s 2002 video Office Edit I that documents the artist’s studio, among other works.

Dealers who opted to take the plunge in this tumultuous year or return after a hiatus emphasized the importance of the Asian market, and Hong Kong’s position at the center of it. Dealer Eva Presenhuber told artnet News that her solo presentations of work by Ugo Rondinone at West Bund Art & Design in 2018 and of American painter Shara Hughes during this year’s Gallery Weekend Beijing were so well received that she was convinced to return to the fair “to further explore our artists’ potential in Asia, and also develop new relationships with clients and institutions in the area.”

Swiss dealer Peter Kilchmann told artnet News that he is returning following a six-year hiatus after making a calculated decision to cut down on participation in South American fairs in order to focus more on the Asian market. He described Art Basel Hong Kong as “the most established art fair in this part of the world.”
