Curator Victoria Nicodemus of New York’s Indiewalls was killed in a car accident Sunday night as a sport utility vehicle swerved onto a sidewalk in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Nicodemus’s 37-year-old boyfriend, Jeffrey Toth; a 75-year-old woman, and two others nearby were also struck by the out-of-control vehicle, but are in stable condition.
The young curator grew up in Dutchess Country and had a bachelor’s degree in art from the University of San Diego.
Nicodemus moved to Brooklyn Heights from Chicago when she was hired by online art gallery Indiewalls. The company help pairs prospective art buyers with artists through “crowdsource” curating, hosting an online marketplace for artists to pitch their work to interested clients.
“She was an incredible young woman,” her brother, Peter Miller told the New York Daily News. “She was the light of our lives. Honestly one of the most beautiful souls.”
Nicodemus was pronounced dead at Brooklyn Hospital Center.
The driver, Marlon Sewell, veered onto the sidewalk to avoid hitting a bus as it pulled into a stop on South Portland Avenue new Fulton Street. The tan Chevy Suburban struck Nicodemus in front of the Not Ray’s Pizza.
Sewell was reportedly arrested for driving without a license or insurance. According to the New York Post, Sewell had previously been caught driving without a license in March.
“The bus was at the bus stop,” witness Andy Timothy told the New York Post. “I heard a boom. I knew something bad had happened.” Timothy told the Daily News that Sewell, who appeared dazed by the incident, was crying and openly distraught.
“This place was a madhouse,” added Byron Logan, who spoke to the Daily News about the accident, which took place as he was buying lottery tickets nearby. “I’ve never seen so many people screaming.”
