Exclusive: Expo Chicago Reveals Exhibitors for Biggest Edition Yet

The fair has grown 40 percent since its debut.

Here’s an advance look at the exhibitor list for the fourth edition of the Expo Chicago art fair, which features 141 galleries from 15 countries.

Among first-time exhibitors this year are Alison Jacques Gallery (London), Kayne Griffin Corcoran (Los Angeles), Pearl Lam Galleries (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore), and Travesía Cuatro (Madrid, Guadalajara). Pace Gallery (New York, Menlo Park, London, Beijing and Hong Kong) is returning for the first time since 2012.

The fair, which takes place September 17–20 at the Navy Pier, has grown steadily since its 2012 debut, which drew 100 galleries. The following year saw 120, and the 2014 edition featured just over 130 exhibitors. Tony Karman, the fair’s founder, says that attendance has similarly risen, with 32,500 attending in 2014, up about 8 percent from 30,000 the previous year.

Dealers told artnet News that sales were strong at the 2014 edition (see Dealers Upbeat About Expo Chicago Sales), which drew on star power, with the FLAG Art Foundation tapping basketball star Shaquille O’Neal to organize its booth (see Expo Chicago’s Third Edition Boasts Show Curated by Shaq).

The price range for a display at Expo this year is from $23,000 for a 400-square-foot booth to $40,000 for 800 square feet. That’s a relative bargain compared to events like Frieze London, where dealers pay nearly $80,000 for the largest booths, and Art Basel in Miami Beach, where prices can top $100,000.

Louis Grachos, the director of the Contemporary Austin, will organize a section devoted to large-scale installations and site-specific works. A program of talks and conversations includes jet-setting curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, Studio Museum in Harlem director Thelma Golden, Los Angeles County Museum of Art curator Franklin Sirmans, and artist Daniel Buren. The Exposure section features galleries in business for less than seven years, and the Editions + Books section features seven print contributors, ranging from New York’s tiny Regina Rex gallery to Beijing’s Ullens Center for Contemporary Art.

Area museums will roll out exhibitions timed to the fair; the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) opens a Rafael Ferrer show, while the Art Institute of Chicago unveils an exhibition devoted to architect David Adjaye, and the Renaissance Society celebrates its centennial.
