A home designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright goes on offer for $2.5-$3 million next month at Los Angeles Modern Auctions.

Situated at the confusingly-named Skyewiay Road on a hillside in the neighborhood of Brentwood, Wright originally designed the red-brick and redwood single-story residence for George D. Sturges, whose name it bears. LA’s Department of City Planning named it a historic monument in 1993.

Measuring 1,200 square feet, the cantilevered house sports a 21-foot wraparound deck. Wright referred to this style of house as Usonian, a term he coined to describe a specific style of homes designed for clients on a budget, which lack basements, attics, or garage spaces. It’s one of about sixty homes he designed in the style, and is the only one in LA. Alas, the architect’s current renown prevents the Sturges Residence from being available to modern middle class Americans.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Bridges/Larson Foundation. The organization is named for filmmaker James Bridges, and screenwriter and producer Jack Larson, who is best known for playing Jimmy Olsen on the 1950s TV series “Adventures of Superman.” Bridges and Larson bought the house for $60,000 in 1967.

While the home is an architectural gem, a former resident told the New York Times that the leaky roof was an issue: “It was beautiful, but unlivable with a baby.”
