As Frieze New York approaches, the fair revealed program details, highlights, and information on its fifth edition.
From May 5-8, over 200 galleries from 31 counties will congregate on Randall’s Island Park, presenting a cross-section of contemporary art from around the world. But plenty of the action will be taking place away from the booths, where director Victoria Siddall has put together a vibrant program of solo shows, artist commissions, installations, curated special sections, education programs, and talks.
This year the fair returns with three specially curated sections: “Spotlight” features solo presentations of 20th century art made after 1960, focusing on non-western traditions; “Focus” exclusively includes works by young galleries, and presents works never before seen in the art fair context; “Frame” shows solo artist presentations by new galleries founded less than eight years ago. For the first time, the fair’s curated sections will be located in a dedicated section of the fair away from the booths, to give visitors a more focused experience.
In contrast, the fair’s site-specific artist commissions by Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Alex Da Corte, GCC, Anthea Hamilton, David Horvitz, Liz Magic Laser, Eduardo Navarro, Heather Phillipson, and Maurizio Cattelan will be placed in uncommon locations, and according to the press release, may even be “moving through the fair,” and “floating above the fair.”
For instance, Cattelan is paying tribute to the 10-year run of Daniel Newburg Gallery by restaging his infamous work, Enter at Your Own Risk—Do Not Touch, Do Not Feed, No Smoking, No Photographs, No Dogs, Thank you (1994), which features, as the press release drily notes, “a bare room inhabited by a live donkey, illuminated by a shiny baroque chandelier.” It was the last exhibition at the Soho space before it closed in 1994.
“Frieze New York” runs from May 5 – May 8, 2016 at Randall’s Island Park, New York.
