Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is planning to open its newest space at Ely House in Mayfair, London in the Spring of 2017. This would mark the opening of a fifth location for the gallery, which also has two spaces in Paris and two is Salzberg. While the announcement follows a time of political uncertainty in London, Thaddaeus Ropac’s intentions, as stated in the press release issued by the gallery, are in recognizing London’s permanence as a vibrant center for art and culture.
The new location will not only create opportunities for exhibitions of gallery artists, but also for collaboration with local cultural institutions.
Ely House in Mayfair is being remodeled with the help of New York-based architect Annabelle Selldorf, principal of Selldorf Architects. Built in 1772 by Sir Robert Taylor, the building has a rich history and has been utilized as a residence by Bishop Edmond Keene of Ely as well as a center for the respected Arts & Crafts architectural firm Smith and Brewer.
Now under the direction of Thaddaeus Ropac, Ely House is being re-purposed once again with a plan of restoration that looks to make the place fit for the exhibition and viewing of contemporary art, while remaining true to the historical architecture of the building.
Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac not only exhibits its own artists but also serves as a curatorial aide to museums, advisor to private and corporate collections, and runs its own publishing house. The new London gallery will dedicate the five floors of Ely House at 37 Dover Street to the exhibition of established and emerging contemporary artists who do not yet have representation in London.
