Two exciting new solo exhibitions in New York by Susan Weil and Marcos Bontempo.

The city’s spring fairs may have come to a close, but that doesn’t mean New York galleries are done for the season. This week we’re taking a look at two exciting new exhibitions in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. Susan Weil and Marcos Bontempo present works that play with ideas of time, space, nature, and powerful emotion, suggesting a fantasy, whether celestial and intangible or rooted in human form.

Sundaram Tagore Gallery presents a solo exhibition of multimedia works by celebrated New York school artist Susan Weil (American, b.1930). The sculptures on view in the exhibition, created using a mix of drawing, photography, and collage, incorporate iconography reminiscent of time and space. Starry views of the sky partnered with fantasized genre scenes call to mind the thrilling idea of time travel. By juxtaposing an imagined past with the movement of the future, Weil leaves the viewer to understand numerous possibilities within her enigmatic scenes.

Susan Weil Time’s Pace will be on view from May 16 to June 15, 2013, at 547 W. 27th Street, New York, NY 10001.

Artist Marcos Bontempo (Argentine/Spanish, b.1969) presents a series of recent paintings in Dancing in the Void, his first solo exhibition at Ricco/Maresca. Bontempo created his work as part of a spiritually and emotionally therapeutic process; the striking figures in his paintings invoke the demons with which the artist battles, including his frequent struggle with schizophrenia and a deep rooted connection to the “creative energy and natural beauty of the world.”1 Whether an abstracted thorny shape balanced precariously between two harmless, smoothed forms, or a distorted human face battling the thought process in its head, one can see visual markers of Bontempo’s internal struggle, and understand the restorative nature of the artistic process.

Marcos Bontempo | Dancing in the Void will be on view from May 16 to June 15, 2013, at 529 W. 20th Street, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10011.
