An artist’s approach to line and color perpetually dictates the feelings that their artwork will evoke from viewers. It is a critical facet of the aesthetic process that grants complexity to art and sets styles apart. This is one reason we often find mid-career and established artists rigorously developing their craft, even after they hit a career peak. With that in mind, we explore exhibitions in New York City showcasing recent work by Bill Scott and Susan Schwalb, two passionate artists who continue to capture the attention of the selective art world with their arresting artwork.

In his newest solo exhibition at Hollis Taggart, Bill Scott (American, b.1956) presents a series of paintings characterized by gestural brushwork and audacious colors. Scott’s energetic paintings are inspired by the artist’s memories of feelings past. They are rendered with an impulsive hand that easily lends itself to his daring color palette. While paintings such as Dream Flowers (2013) depict tangible forms, others such as Kimura’s Garden (2013) are abstract and more in sync with feelings evoked by color rather than form.
Susan Schwalb—Spatial Polyphonies: New Metalpoint Drawings will be on view on October 3 at 547 W 27th Street, Suite 207, New York, NY 10001
In Chelsea, Garvey | Simon Art Access will be presenting new metalpoint drawings by artist, Susan Schwalb (American, b.1944). Schwalb is considered one of the foremost artists in silverpoint drawing, and has, in many ways, redefined the way this traditional technique is applied to abstract drawing. In the exhibition Spatial Polyphonies, the artist uses an array of metals including gold, copper, and bronze to create sharp, multilayered compositions that call to mind the work of female Op artists, Edna Andrade (American, 1917–2008) and Bridget Riley (British, b.1931). The artist’s employment of contour and color materializes into overlapping shapes that appear to emerge from the gessoed panels. In works such as Toccata IV (2013), horizontal bands of lines that resemble staves on sheet music, play upon the spatial ambiguity of the picture plane, producing a melody of rifts in the artwork.
