Berlin is currently basking in the spotlight of the 66th International Film Festival in Berlin, with numerous high-profile Hollywood stars gracing the German capital with their daily red carpet appearances. For the international art world jet-setters, however, the real date on the calendar for a Berlin visit is at the end of April, when a slew of the city’s galleries align their exhibition schedules and offer some of the strongest shows of the year during Gallery Weekend.
The weekend has managed to establish itself as a magnet for international collectors, leading other cities around the world such as Barcelona or Paris to adopt the successful format and launch their own versions of Gallery Weekend.
Now in its 12 edition, the long weekend will see openings by 54 participating galleries. The program abounds with highlights, including a joint presentation by galleries NEU and Plan B who will exhibit Romanian painter Victor Man; Carlier Gebauer will host Iman Issa’s first show with the gallery; KEWENIG will present Ghada Amer; and Capitain Petzel will hold an exhibition by photographer Christopher Williams.
A quick glance at the program reveals, regretfully, that last year’s unusually high number of stellar shows by women artists will not be repeated in this iteration. However, dealers like König Galerie, who generally stand out with the number of established women artists on their roster, do not disappoint.
