Gallerist Gavin Brown will be hosting an exhibition of his own work at his eponymous gallery tomorrow night, reports Gallerist. The gallery bigwig actually got his start as an artist, showing at David Zwirner way back in December of 1993, but has since made his name dealing art, rather than making it, at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, which opened in 1994.

Last year, Brown returned to his artist roots at the behest of Milwaukee’s Green Gallery. Gavin Brown, a show of his new work, was on view there between January and March. The two-channel video projection shown in that exhibition will have its New York debut tomorrow in Brown’s West Village space.

Brown spoke about his artistic hiatus with Art Review, telling them  “I stopped because I didn’t feel compelled to make. Also, I didn’t trust my own voice. Since then I have come to miss that conversation one has with oneself. The artist, in my mind, is the ultimate human being. The human being we were made to be.”

Though it’s been over 20 years since his last showing in New York, Brown told Gallerist that he has since picked up his artistic practice again, albeit intermittently. “This is the first time I’ve been happy enough to put something out there.”
