Here Are the 10 Most Expensive Lots Sold at Auction in September 2024

The top lots of September mostly featured offerings from Impressionist masters.

An enthusiastic crowd armed with camera phones capture the moment of auctioneer Adrien Meyer selling Claude Monet's Nymphéas at Christie's Hong Kong 20th/21st Century Art Inaugural Evening Sale at the Henderson on September 26, 2024.

September is not ordinarily a major marquee auction month, but the stats this time around, with all top lots well into the millions—the lowest price of the ten was $5.4 million—would seem to belie that. All were achieved at just two sales: Christie’s Hong Kong evening auction of 20th- and 21st-century art, and at Galerie Kornfeld’s mid-September auction in Bern, Switzerland.

The list is an eclectic mix of Impressionist and modern works by the likes of Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet alongside classics from Zao Wou-ki and Kim Whan-ki, and a more contemporary offering from blue chip star artists George Condo.
