Today, the world’s oldest and most important art fair for modern and contemporary art of the 20th and 21th centuries is opening its doors to art lovers and specialists. At the 49th edition of Art Cologne, you can view, buy, and discover art. Around 200 international galleries will showcase selected and curated top-quality artworks, such as Aurel Scheibler, LEVY Galerie, and Lullin + Ferrari, just to name a few. The Art Cologne Prize 2015 was given to gallery owner Hans Mayer, a founding member of Kunstmarkt Köln, the precursor to Art Cologne.

During this yearly art fair, a lot of art happenings take place in Germany’s fourth-largest city. The city has more than 40 museums and 110 galleries and art dealers. Many of the museums are world renowned, such as the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum and the Museum Ludwig. The latter annually awards the Wolfgang Hahn Prize around the time of Art Cologne. This year, the prize, named after well-known collector and Cologne native Wolfgang Hahn, was given to artists Michael Krebber and R.H. Quaytman, marking the first time in the award’s 20-year history that two artists were honored at the same time. Parallel to Art Cologne, the second edition of the Kölner Liste, the ‘discovery fair’ for contemporary art, will be held at Mülheimer harbor.

On the occasion of Art Cologne, a number of galleries have special exhibitions. Galerie Thomas Zander presents artworks by the Spanish artist Santiago Sierra in his first solo exhibition, with a four-by-four-by-four-meter black concrete cube, which will be on view in Cologne-Deutz in front of the fair building, opposite the south entrance.

After being one of the 60,000 visitors at Art Cologne, join the thousands of other tourists who climb the 509 steps to the impressive cathedral every year, and visit the home of renowned artists such as Gerhard Richter or Rosemarie Trockel.
