Kicking off the art fair season in New York is the IFPDA Print Fair, which opened yesterday at the Park Avenue Armory. Never short on cultural events, the city delivers a slew of must-see artistic excursions to start your November off right. For those who don’t make it to the fair, but are still hoping for an insider art fair experience, check out Rogue Space, where Mark Anthony Green is teasing works from his upcoming show at Art Basel Miami Beach. Also making its much-anticipated New York debut is the highly acclaimed Chris Ofili show at the New Museum, the artist’s first major solo exhibition in the United States, highlighting his striking and monumental body of work.
Opening this weekend at Freight + Volume is the solo show “If You Can’t Say Something Nice,” featuring Michael Scoggins, whose personal and political works range from scribbled drawings to handwritten notes, offering an intimate look into the mind of the artist. If that doesn’t satisfy your yen for satire, Pop art fans should stop by POP International Galleries, which is showcasing over 50 original works by the Superstar himself, Andy Warhol, beginning next week. For an additional dose of whimsy, don’t miss Alexander Kaletski at Anna Zorina Gallery, whose playful paintings offer a witty take on America’s celebrity-obsessed culture.
Or, for a taste of the surreal, see paintings by Julio Valdez at June Kelley Gallery, whose “aquatic theaters” present a dreamlike and colorful view of the artist’s native Dominican Republic.
Whether you are a weekend visitor or long-time New Yorker, be sure to make time to see these exciting exhibitions. You won’t be disappointed.
