The City of Love, Paris, is also the city of art, attracting both artists and art lovers for centuries. When you think about Paris, one of the first things that comes to mind is the Louvre. This institution was the world’s most visited art museum in 2013, and is home to the famous Mona Lisa. This month, the Art Paris Art Fair is bringing together 140 galleries from 20 countries at the Grand Palais, showing modern and contemporary art, including photography, design, and art books. The Grand Palais, built for the Universal Exposition in 1900, will also be featuring an exhibition of the famous Spanish Baroque painter Velázquez during the fair.
Many Parisian galleries are featuring Asian art this month. Galerie Karsten Greve, Paris, with other locations in Cologne and St. Moritz, is showing oil-on-canvas paintings by Chinese landscape painter Qiu Shihua in his first solo exhibition in France for almost 10 years. Works on Japanese paper by Takehiko Sugawara can be seen in his solo exhibition at Galerie Tamenaga, which has recently begun showing the work of Contemporary Japanese artists. And Galerie LOFT is featuring a Chinese artist in the exhibition “Liu Xin Tao ‘Cameria Obscura.”
France would not be France without French artists. 15 selected prints by the American/French artist Louise Bourgeois are on view at Galerie Lelong Paris. This Tuesday, a retrospective of artist Pierre Bonnard opened at the Musée d’Orsay that sheds new light on Post-Impressionism, and features more than 80 works. The exhibition will later travel to Madrid and San Francisco. Photography is also highlighted in Paris. Contemporary photographs by the young French artist Claire Adelfang that “deal with the place of architecture as a trace of human activity in spite of the paradoxical absence of any humans in it” are presented by Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac.
