New England, with its 6,000 miles of coastline and dozens of sandy beaches, has long been a popular summer destination, as both locals and tourists trade in their snow boots for sunscreen and head outside. After a particularly punishing winter, it seems that cultural institutions are equally eager to celebrate, with museums and galleries throughout the region offering a variety of summer-themed shows and other exciting exhibitions.
If you are one of the many visitors to Cape Cod, stop by Addison Art Gallery, which is hosting an ongoing series of events featuring works inspired by the great American realist painter Edward Hopper. The exhibition begins at the gallery’s main location in Orleans, and will later travel to a number of other locations throughout the area, with works by both painters and photographers on view.
For those of you enjoying a city vacation, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is a must see. In addition to its extensive collection of Impressionist art, the museum is also hosting an exhibition of fashion photographer Herb Ritts, along with paintings, woodblock prints, and illustrated books by renowned Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. On Boston’s famed Newbury Street, Barbara Krakow Gallery is offering two group shows highlighting big names, including Sol LeWitt, Ed Ruscha, Ellsworth Kelly, and Mel Bochner. Or else check out “Summer Street Art” just a few doors down at DTR Modern Galleries.
In New England, this summer is all about art, so enjoy!
