At Pace, Tim Hawkinson’s Impossible Bottle

THE DAILY PIC: A geometer's imaginary "Klein bottle" takes shape in bamboo.

THE DAILY PIC: Tim Hawkinson made this piece, titled Gimbled Klein Basket, in 2007, but it’s now in the show called “Eureka” at Pace gallery in New York. As usual, Hawkinson has decided to do something absurdly sophisticated with absurdly insufficient means. Using bamboo and wire, he’s created a real-life, 3D analogue for a “Klein bottle”, which is normally a geometer’s theoretical account of a 4D object whose inside is its outside. The funny thing is, when you’re in front of Hawkinson’s piece, it seems both crudely material and strangely not-there. (Photo by Lucy Hogg)
