The exhibitor list is out for VOLTA 13, the long-running satellite fair for Art Basel in Basel, founded in 2005. Participating in 2017 are 70 galleries from 43 cities across four continents. The fair will feature the work of artists from over 50 nations.

Over half of participating galleries will show solo projects and dual artist booths, always a strong focus for the fair. New to the fair this year are an even dozen exhibitors, including LMAKgallery in New York, Milan’s Galleria Bianconi, and Roger Katwijk of Amsterdam.

“We really love the Basel art fair, and we wanted to take part in it,” said Valentina Peri, director of first-time exhibitor Galerie Charlot of Paris, to artnet News, praising VOLTA as one of the best satellite fairs. “It gives space to mid-career galleries and we thought it was a better place for us.”

Besides the newcomers, there is considerable turnover, as over 30 galleries who made the trip to Basel in 2016 will not be returning.

“We’re taking a break from all of the crazy travel that really disrupts our work flow,” Matthew Weldon Showman, gallery director and partner of New Orleans’s Jonathan Ferrara Gallery told artnet News of the gallery’s decision to sit this one out. “We’ve been doing so many fairs and have not found them to be as successful as we’d hoped.”

Speaking of traveling, it’s a big year for the European art circuit, as Basel and VOLTA will coincide with what’s being called the “Grand Tour”: the 57th Venice Biennale; documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel, Germany; and the fifth edition of Germany’s Skulptur Projekte Munster.

VOLTA co-founders, huband-and-wife team Amanda Coulson and Ulrich Voges, were both born on the 13th, and are very optimistic about what they’ve dubbed VOLTA’s “Lucky 13” edition.

In a statement, Coulson, the fair’s artistic director, said that she is “really excited to see the incarnation of all the proposals we received. The range is really extraordinary—from Biennale participating artists to new faces—so my feeling is the fair will be both quite energizing and educational—even a bit challenging, just like most teenagers!”
