Price Check! Here’s What Sold—and for How Much—at Art Basel Miami Beach 2022

Here's what dealers say they sold at the 20th edition of the fair.

December in many parts of the world means the official kick off to the yuletide season, when it’s finally acceptable to turn on Mariah Carey and trim the tree. In the art world, of course, December means only one thing: it’s time for Miami Art Week.

This year, the marquee Art Basel fair in Miami celebrated its—count ’em—20th edition. It was an impressive milestone for the fair, which in its infancy attracted just a fraction of the well-heeled art collectors, and very few (if any) of the celebrities, that now consider Art Week a highlight of the social calendar.

Beyond the glitz of the fair, however, the undeniable fact of an impending recession was a main topic of conversation. Outgoing Art Basel director Marc Spiegler touted the event as “the most important fair in the most important market in the world,” and collectors were buying, just at a slower pace and lower price point than in the past three years. Blue-chip galleries like Pace, Hauser & Wirth, Gladstone Gallery, and White Cube still managed to find buyers for seven-figure works, but modestly-priced and sized works were more in-demand.

Perhaps the most-talked about work at the fair was MSCHF’s ATM Leaderboard (2022) at Perrotin, an Instagrammable gimmick to rival the gallery’s 2019 presentation of Maurizio Cattelan’s banana wall-sculpture. The ATM machine ranked visitors based on their bank accounts, and perhaps in a barometer of the state of the art market, celebrity DJ Diplo took his place at the top of the leaderboard this weekend.

Below, as always, is our roundup of reported sales at the fair, converted to USD for ease of reading. And, as always, it’s worth keeping in mind that only galleries who choose to share figures are included in this list, so it’s disproportionately skewed toward those who sold the most stuff.
