Does Cameron Jamie Incite Sofa Molesting?

THE DAILY PIC: In Jamie's new solo at Gladstone Gallery, Christmas trolls and furniture fantasies make for potent weirdness.

THE DAILY PIC (#1801): A few years back, when I first saw Cameron Jamie’s video about Austrian villagers who dress as Christmas trolls and terrorize their neighbors, I thought, “Wow, that is really weird.” Then I saw his new solo at Gladstone in New York, and realized that his Yuletide video, on view there, was utterly normal compared to a more recent piece called Massage the History. That new piece presents (mostly) found footage of young Black males dry-humping bougie furniture. It left me more speechless than ever. By my usual standards, that is high praise. Thinking of the risk to the sofas and chairs, I wonder if my standards need revision. (Image courtesy Gladstone Gallery, NY)
