Uwe and Gert Tobias's debut solo show at Cassina Projects is on view through October 24.
Artists Gert and Uwe Tobias, the twins better known as the Tobias Brothers, are debuting their first solo exhibition at the Milan gallery Cassina Projects. Born in Transylvania and based in Cologne, the Tobias Brothers’ work draws heavily on local myths and the folkloric legends of Germanic culture, inflected with aspects of Surrealism and Symbolism.
The resulting works are enigmatic, with contorted animal-like figures set against muted, hazy landscapes which give no indication of any specific place or time. Existing in a state of limbo, tendrils of color snake across the canvases, accentuated by grid-like formations visible in the background, adding to the sense of mystery. The crisp outlines of the figures—often with sharp pointed ears and bent fingers—is achieved through a modified-woodcut process—an aspect of three-dimensionality that is echoed in ceramic sculptures throughout the gallery.
