Richard Misrach has been regarded as one of the most influential pioneers of color in fine art photography since the 1970s. Currently, Artnet Auctions’ Important Photographs sale is offering a prime example of Misrach’s large-scale landscape photography and his explorations of human interventions on nature. Now through March 25, don’t miss the opportunity to bid on Untitled #892-03 (2003), an iconic image by the renowned photographer.
This photo, from Misrach’s On The Beach series, was captured from a high balcony in Hawaii. Focusing his lens on a single swimmer, the artist composed a voyeuristic image that exudes a sense of tranquility and loneliness, while underscoring the isolated figure’s inherent vulnerability. On The Beach was largely influenced by the events of 9/11. Misrach was in Washington D.C. and his son in New York City when the attacks took place. Deeply haunted by the event, Misrach began exploring the idea of being watched. Describing On The Beach, Misrach said, “I always thought about it as being a god’s-eye view, looking down and seeing these amazing human interactions.” The wide framing and overwhelmingly vast landscape in Untitled #892-03 (2003) is typical of his work, and at over ten feet framed, work is a monumental addition to any collection.
Since 2015, the mean estimate for Misrach’s work has been almost consistently lower than the average sale price achieved. This signals a high demand for Misrach’s work, and a demand that continues to increase. What’s more, in 2019, a work by Misrach sold for $125,000, outperforming its high estimate by $45,000. The work in our sale, estimated at $50,000—70,000, is particularly well priced for a work of its size and caliber.
Misrach’s photographs continue to increase in value, making now a perfect time to invest in one of his mesmerizing and massive prints. Don’t miss the opportunity to add Untitled #892-03 (2003) to your collection—bidding is live through March 25 on Artnet Auctions.
