Matthew Teitelbaum will be the new director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Teitebaum succeeds Malcolm Rogers at the MFA (see The Weekly Shuffle: The Hirshhorn, the Public Art Fund, and More). When Teitelbaum assumes his role at the MFA in August, he will be the 11th director in the museum’s 145-year history.

Currently the director and CEO of Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto, the Toronto-born director joined AGO in 1993 as chief curator and has held the director post since 1998. Teitelbaum has also held positions at the ICA Boston, the Mendel Art Gallery, and the London Regional Art Gallery. In 2006, he received the honor of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French government for his contribution to the arts.

As AGO’s director, Teitelbaum was credited with expanding the museum’s collections, broadening its reach with audiences, and increasing the institution’s research initiatives. In 2002, the director spearheaded a massive renovation and expansion of the museum, realized by another Toronto native, starchitect Frank Gehry.

Teitelbaum was instrumental in securing a $100 million (CAD) gift from collector and businessman Ken Thomson to complete the $306 million fundraising campaign for the project, which boosted the museum’s exhibition space by 47 percent.

“The search committee was impressed with Matthew’s accomplishments at the AGO, and with the the energy and vision he will bring to the MFA,” said Sandra Moose, the president of MFA’s board of trustees in a press release. “He has truly redefined the AGO from top to bottom—both its infrastructure and, more importantly, the gallery’s role as a home for art, the exchange of ideas, and an outstanding cultural resource for its community and country.”
