Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced 16 new appointments to the Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission, in addition to four honorary members. This marks the creation of a new CAAC: those designated will work with five returning members to counsel the Mayor and Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Tom Finkelpearl on issues affecting NYC’s cultural community.
Celebrated actor, director, and writer Steve Buscemi, artist Fred Wilson, Phillips senior advisor Arnold Lehman, and Studio Museum director Thelma Golden will join the committee, along with returning member Agnes Gund—President Emerita of New York’s Museum of Modern Art and member of the Board of Trustees of the National Council on the Arts in DC.
Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito noted in a statement announcing the appointments that “these individuals represent the great talent and diversity of New York’s arts and culture community” and she hopes they serve to make “New York friendlier and more accessible” for residents and visitors.
