New York’s Seagram Building, already hosting three massive outdoor Alexander Calder artworks (see “The Seagram Building Is Down One Picasso, Up Three Calders“), made room for a few more this week during the Storm King Art Center‘s fifth annual gala dinner at the Four Seasons. Two of the sculptor’s delicate hanging mobiles were perfectly at home in the iconic restaurant during the event, held in honor of the Calder Foundation and its president, Alexander S. C. Rower, Calder’s grandson.

Calder’s artwork has been a mainstay at the Mountainville, New York, sculpture park for over 25 years. While 3 Fleches Blanches (1965), Angulaire (1975), and Saurien (1975) will engage passersby on Park Avenue through November 10, visitors to Storm King will continue to be greeted by Calder’s monumental The Arch (1975) and to enjoy the museum’s “Calder Hillside” on an ongoing basis.

At the Four Seasons, an impressive array of hors d’oeuvres, including foie gras, caviar, and smoked salmon, started off the evening. During the cocktail hour, guests previewed an array of six artworks, one each by Calder, Dan Budnick, Richard Serra, Zhang Huan, Holton Rower, and George Rickey, to be auctioned following the meal.

Fairfax Dorn, Rainer Judd, Diana Widmaier Picasso, Cynthia Hazen Polsky, and Adam D. Weinberg served as honorary chairs for the event, with Storm King president John Stern and director and curator David Collens on hand as hosts. Artists at the gala included Mark di Suvero, Bill Cunningham, Sarah Sze, and Alice Aycock, with Beth Rudin DeWoody, Robert Mnuchin, and Fran Lebowitz also in attendance.
